The objective of this dissertation was to determine how the formation and the structuring a museum organizational field took place in the Metropolitan Region of Recife. The research work was on a field historical perspective, related to its formation, identification of the main social groups involved, its formation and structure, considering their influence and isomorphic pressure. The main supporting theoretical approach was DiMaggio and Powell (1991), Aldrich, (1979) and the symbolic power of Bourdieu, (1989). The research study had the support of a historical qualitative design. For the analysis process, some categories were created to identify and described the process of formation and structuring field organizational for museums. The datas were collected through interviews and documents, during the year of 2001. The results had demonstrated that the field presents a low degree of institutionalization, low level of professionalization and organizations interaction, and low feeling to belong to the field as a social class action. The actions of museums institutional development, to a large extent, were found to be very isolated action or in some specific cases, dependable on governmental sphere and some entailed organizations. The field has passing through a process of restructuring where new social actors included higher management values in the context of organizational decision making
