RESUMO

G rip strength involves holding an object between his fingers partially flexed, as opposed to the backpressure generated by the palm, the thenar eminence and the distal segment of the thumb by encouraging the full use of force. With the exception of locomotor activity, grip strength is used in almost all activities of daily living. Anthropometric data such as weight and height are the ones that are associated with grip strength, different size and shape of the hand, the body mass index is expressed by the relationship between body mass in kilograms and height in m2. Trisomy 21 is a genetic disease caused by abnormal chromosome division. The purpose of this study was to assess grip strength in individuals of both sexes, diagnosed with Trisomy 21 aged between twenty and forty-four years and to correlate them with the body mass index. This study is a descriptive, applied, quantitative approach, using the deductive method of investigation. The research included the participation of 40 individuals in two groups. The study group comprised - GE twenty (20) people diagnosed with Trisomy 21 and the control group CG, twenty (20) persons without a diagnosis of Trisomy 21. Each group consists of individuals, male and female aged between 20 and 44 years, being the age of higher labor activity. The subjects underwent evaluation of grip using the JAMAR dynamometer, the assessment of Body Mass Index - BMI was performed using a stadiometer and portable digital scale. The results showed that grip strength is significantly lower for both sexes in persons with Trisomy 21 than in people without a diagnosis of Trisomy 21, grip strength has a statistically significant difference between individuals with a diagnosis (GE) and without diagnosis of Trisomy 21 (GC) in both sexes. In people diagnosed with Trisomy 21 there is no correlation of values in relation to measures of grip strength in both hands with age and BMI. In people without a diagnosis of Trisomy 21 we observed a correlation between BMI and 2 measure the strength of grip with the right hand. It is believed that the knowledge of this research data will assit in determining parameters for hand rehabilitation in individuals with Trisomy 21 at the age of greater labor activity.
