RESUMO

This study is dedicated to investigation of the linguistic identity of Capeverdean Language through the phonological component of four out of the ten constituent islands of the Archipelago of Cape Verd: Santiago and Fogo, in Sotavento (Leeward), Santo Antão and São Vicente, in Barlavento (Windward). This research naturally inserts itself in the Creole Studies of generative nature, complemented by inherent sociolinguistic aspects. The theoretical-methodological apparatus for analysis is the one of Optimality Theory (OT), generativist model based on universal and violated restrictions of the Universal Grammar (GU), which are arranged in similar and different ways in the languages of the world. The main purpose is to describe end study the syllable and accent marks in the fore mentioned islands, adding to that the perspective of collaborating in the debate regarding the unit and/or variety in Capeverdean. The result is a synchronic descriptive-explanatory work of capeverdean phonology with inevitable diachronic touches related to the formation and modification observed in the studied islands and, as a consequence, between the two major linguistic groups represented by them, Sotavento e Barlavento.
