RESUMO

The objective of this work was study the possibility of concentration of Serra Serpentina ore, considered of iron low grade by direct flotation. Were checked three collectors: sodium oleate, commercial hydroxamate (AERO 6493), commercial sulfonate (AERO 825) and as depressor was used sodium metassilicate. At a first moment, it was made microflotation studies of pure mineral samples (hematite and quartz), using Hallimond modified tube with three collectors and depressor, looking for the pH that given the better selectivity in separation between these two minerals. The higher flotability of hematite and quartz was achieved in pH 7 and 9, respectively. When used hydroxamate was, respectively, 7 and 10. For sulfonate was 4 and 5, respectively. It was determined the zeta potential curves of these minerals that was conditioning with distillated water, in collectors solutions and in sodium silicate solution follow collector addition. The PZC values for hematite and quartz was 7.5 and 1.8, respectively. Finally, was made tests of reverse flotation (using starch/amine) and direct (using sodium oleate, hydroxamate, sulfonate and sodium silicate as depressor) in batch scale using factorial design of experiments, with replica. In reverse flotation a test using 200 g/t of corn starch and 150 g/t of EDA amine was obtained a concentrate with 66.4% of iron grade, 3.8% of silica and iron metallurgical recovery 75.8%. In direct flotation tests using 1200 g/t of sodium oleate and 600 g/t of sodium silicate the concentrate had 55.8% of Fe, 14.4% of silica and 88% of iron metallurgical recovery. For the direct flotation tests using 1200 g/t of hydroxamate and 1500 g/t of sodium silicate, the iron grade in concentrate was 61.5%, silica 9.8% and iron metallurgical recovery was 77.9%. In direct flotation using 1200 g/t of sulfonate and 2100 g/t of sodium silicate, the grades in concentrate was 57.9% of iron, 13.3% of silica and iron metallurgical recovery 89.9%. In direct flotation was achieved higher iron metallurgical recovery (77.9% to 89.9%) than reverse flotation (75,8%). However, the iron grade in direct flotation concentrate (57.9% to 61.5%) was lower that the iron grade in reverse flotation (66.4%). The silica grade in direct flotation concentrate (9.8% to 14.4%) was very higher that the silica grade in reverse flotation concentrate (3.8%).
