RESUMO

In the present study, we examine a better floristic, base of the severa I communities better delimited that compose the vegetation complex of the coastal plain of Picinguaba. That plain possesses about 8 Krn2, situated in the township of Ubatuba, northern coast of the State of São Paulo, (23°20 -23°22 S /44°48 -44°52 W). This area is a Unit of Conservation of the State Park of the Serra do Mar. The coastal area is characterized by a discontinuous occurrence of small bays and narrow beaehes, inserted within the Serra do Mar. The regional climate is humid tropical (Af), and presents a mean annual temperature above 18°C and an annual rainfall greater than 2,200 mm, evenly distributed throughout the year. The vegetation is a complex of communities, whose diversification depends upon geomorphologic and pedological variations and upon the drainage dynamics of the plain. Communities selected to be studied was based upon field observations and phytoeeological and geomorphologic mapping. The general floristie analysis of the plain was based upon the floral eolleetion of Pieinguaba in the HRCB, with approximately 3,000 sheets. Results of this analysis were compared with 5 other studies of the Brazilian Southeast Coast, using the Sorensen similarity coefficient and cluster analysis. This procedure compared 5 forest areas that had been plot (1 Ox1 Om) sampled and included individuals of DBH<- for 5em. These 5 areas were eompared with each other and with other studies of the Coast of São Paulo. In another forest, denominated of "caxetal", whole plant sampling, independent of stem circumference was performed, and these results were compared with others from areas of "caxetais". The formations reeognized and eharacterized were: Herbaeeous Vegetation of Coastal Dunes, Selerophyllous Serub Vegetation of Coastal Dunes, Swamp Grassland Vegetation of the Coastal Plain, Mangroves and Forest. The latter were differentiated by the characteristic floristic and structure, being denominated: Sclerophyllous Forest of Coastal Dune, Periodically Flooded Swamp Forest of the Coastal Plain, Riparian Forest of the Coastal Plain, Atlantic Pluvial Forest of the Coastal Plain and Low-Iand Atlantic Pluvial Forest. In addition to these, the Permanently Flooded Swamp Forest of the Coastal Plain, or "Caxetal", presented a low diversity, high dominance of "caxeta" and a high vegetative reproduction potential of this species, of which most of the other species depend on as support for establishment. The comparison between the present study and floristic studies in the coastal plains of the Southeast Coast, revealed relatively low similarity values, indicating the restricted species occurrence in these areas. This highlights the need and importance of further studies for its conservation
