RESUMO

This research aimed characterise the floristic composition and tree community structure throughout a toposequence in a Semideciduous Seasonal Forest patch in the municipality of Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, Brazil (2045S and 4255W). The climate in the region is Cwb by Köppen system. Sampling was carried out by the plot method, where five groups of four contiguous 10 x 25 m sample units, along a topographic gradient, on 80 m intervals, starting in the lowland streamside area toward the top. All trees into the sample units, which had the trunk perimeter at breast height (PBH) equal or superior to 15 cm, were measured, identified and grouped in sucessional classes. The specimen were distributed in 127 species, belonging to 80 genus and 41 botanical families. The richest families were Lauraceae, Euphorbiaceae, Annonaceae, Mimosaceae and Myrtaceae. Using the Engler classification system the family Leguminosae would be the first in species number. The richest genus were Casearia, Ocotea and Inga. Phytosociology registered 1275 alive and 118 dead and upright trees. Euphorbiaceae, Annonaceae, Mimosaceae, Lauraceae and Myrtaceae presented the greatest importance value. Mabea fistulifera Mart., Xylopia sericea St. Hil., Piptadenia gonoacantha (Mart.) Macbr., Xylopia brasiliensis Spreng. and Lacistema pubescens Mart. presented the greatest values of relative frequency, dominance and density. The dead trees sum 21% of the importance value, which may be related to liana woods infestation and fragment isolation. Soil analysis reveal very low fertility, being a few better in the lowland streamside area, because its favourable place to accumulate nutrients. Both floristic similarity and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) present two groups, one with the sample units on the top and other with in the streamside area. The sample units in the slope present scattered, showing a transition environment. Top sample units were related to argyle and aluminium, which got a lower floristic diversity. Therefore, the species that growing on this area possibly are top selective. The results of the present research showed that species like Mabea fistulifera, Xylopia sericea, Maprounea guianensis can be used to forest reclamation projects on higher relief areas in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais State.
