RESUMO

The State of Rio Grande do Sul is one of the five main Brazilian producers of flowers and ornamental plants, and it is the main per capita consumer of these products in the country. In the Southern region of the State, Floriculture is increasing in economic and social expression, although it has not reached a differential that makes it competitive when compared to the traditional producing regions. The flora diversity from this State has many native species with morphologic characteristics of interest for the Floriculture which can offer this differential. Therefore, this study was developed to characterize the Floriculture in the counties of the Corede Sul (Southern part of Rio Grande do Sul State) and to show the native plants of this region to be used in floral art. The productive sector, the production of cut flowers in this area, and the commercialization and use of cut foliage in the local flower shops were evaluated. Since Rumohra adiantiformis is commonly used, the gathering and commercialization of this species was characterized. In an ideal scenery, where the production and vocation for Floriculture is present and the floral art is appreciated, native plants can be a viable economic option. To determine the degree of ornamental potential of native plants, a method based on characteristics of interest for the market and the floral art was proposed and validated. The aesthetic traits and vase life of the Andropogon bicornis, Baccharis articulata, B. usterii, Eryngium eriophorum, E. ebracteatum, E. sanguisorba, Hypericum connatum, Myrsine umbellata, Schinus lentiscifolius and S. terebinthifolius floral stems were analysed, checking its aptness to be used as floral complement. The results indicate that the Floriculture, as an agricultural activity, contributes to the Corede Sul regional development, shows enhanced specialization, mainly related to the use of production technology, and also that Pelotas county is a flower and ornamental plant producer and customer pole in the region that has a tendency to increase and specialize the production of cut flowers. The cut foliages used by the florists evidence a traditional floral art style. The use of leather fern in the floricultures of the Southern part of Rio Grande do Sul is very significant. The fronds are gathered directly and exclusively from natural populations, and do not have commercial production. The form developed proves to be an efficient way to evaluate the ornamental potential of native and non conventional plants. The aesthetic qualities and the vase life of Andropogon bicornis, Baccharis articulata, B. usterii, Eryngium eriophorum, E. ebracteatum, E. sanguisorba, Hypericum connatum, Myrsine umbellata, Schinus lentiscifolius and S. terebinthifolius floral stems have shown high degree of ornamental potential and aptness to be used as complement to the floral art, indicating that it can be an excellent option to the diversification of this segment in the Southern part of the State. Keywords: Floriculture, gathering, cut flowers, cut foliages, floral art.
