RESUMO
Many errors in the use of the concept of critique could be prevented if the theoretical and methodological bases of the work of Florestan Fernandes are taken into account. Aiming to provide a better understanding of Fernandes s sociology, the research starts with a discussion of this concept applying it to his theoretical and empirical works as well as to the literature related to their reception. The conclusion is that the term critique can be applied to Fernandes s critical attitude in relation to both his object of knowledge and the method for the discipline of sociology.
