RESUMO

The present work presents a taxonomic of the review of the genus Magonia St. Hil. The morphological characters used to distinguish the two species, Magonia pubescens St. Hil, and Magonia glabrata St, Hil., were studied, with particular emphasis on palinological data. The taxonomic study was based on material of the genus Magonia St. Hill from various herbaria in Brazil and Europe; the types of the two species described by Saint Hilaire, deposited in the musée Nationl d?Histoire Naturelle of Paris, were also examined. The pollen of the two types has been analysed. The results obtained demonstrated that the pubescens of the leaflets, branchlets and bracts shows a continuos distribution with no discontinuities in the density of hair, and that the fruit shape and size, an other character used to distinguish the two species, showed also a gradient. The pollen grains showed a gradient of size but two distinct patterns of sculpture were found: rugulate and striate. As it was impossible to establish a correlation between the sculpture pattern of the pollen grain and other characters studied, it was decided that the genus Magonia should be regarded as monospecific, and that valid name for the species should be Magonia pubescens St. Hil ...Note: The complete abstract is available with the full electronic digital thesis or dissertations
