RESUMO

Due to its multifaceted character, conjugal violence is a social, political, economical and health problem, that requires interdisciplinarity and intersectoriality to be understood and faced. Its an exploratory and descriptive study, to which many methods were used, involving quantitative and qualitative aspects, based on Social Representations Theory. The object of this study is the process of facing conjugal violence. Its aim was to analyze the process of facing conjugal violence. We considered the ethic aspects based on the 196/96 Resolution of Health National Council (BRASIL, 1996), approved by the Ethic Committee on Research of Santo Antonio Hospital under n 31/07. 50 women and 50 men constituted our study population. Those women and men lives or had lived a stable union. We interviewed those people (through semi-structured interview) in order to know social and economical characteristics as well as conjugal violence occurrences. We also did Words Free Association Test to apprehend the structure and content of social representations on conjugal violence. 11 women and 11 men who had lived conjugal violence were interviewed in a qualitative approach. Quantitative data were processed through EVOC 2005. Qualitative data were organized through NVIVO7 based on Bardin content analysis, specifically Thematic Analysis. Our population was composed by women and men who, themselves, declared to be Niger, living a stable union and whose conjugal relations are permeated by violence. Women whose story is permeated by violence (80%) has serious financial problems, mainly caused by the high economic dependence rate (94%), by the unemployment rate (40%) and also by low scholarship (76% are not still in high school). This study showed that violence is manifested in conjugal relation since the early moments of relationship, being present also during pregnancy and seriously complicating health. The process of facing the phenomenon requires a web of social help; understanding the construction of gender inequality; the ability of solving conflicts peacefully and respectfully; changing the representation of women‟s police station and create a space of conflicts mediation; efficiency of police and juridical departments; and an articulation with public policies. In that perspective, I defend that the process of facing conjugal violence is slow and passes by an understanding of phenomenon complexity, an interdisciplinary knowledge, an intersectorial action, political conquests and also the opportunity of think about social values and find peaceful strategies to solve conflicts under new models of relationships in the family, in the school, at work, in society. The study contributes, academically and socially, to the development of theoretical knowledge on conjugal violence and its process of facing; leads actions in the sense of breaking conjugal violence relation; and gives valuable subsides to rethink the formation of caretakers and the process of caretaking. In Nursing, this care must be reflected on the early identification of violence situations when forwarding people victims of violence to the web attention services in order to avoid more serious damages to health, even death.
