RESUMO

The present work was conducted in two chapters: on chapter one a study about the phylogenetic position of the clade Steatogenini (formed by the genus Hypopygus Hoedeman, Stegostenopos Triques, e Steatogenys Boulenger) were carried out based on nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences. On chapter two, a study about the genetic differentiation on Hypopygus lepturus (Gymnotiformes: Rhamphicthyidae), sampled in 8 igarapés on the middle Rio Negro, was conducted based on control region mitochondrial DNA sequences. The analyses confirmed the monophily of Steatogenini, although, oppose to the traditional classification, the analyses shown that the clade is indeed part of the family Rhamphicthyidae. Besides, the results shown that the genus Hypopygus is more specious than thought, and that H. lepturus is a species complex in differentiation, from the genetic point of view. Complementary analyses on the H. lepturus species complex EOD shown that one of the lineages identified is very differentiated of the others ones. At the same time, the lineages with overlapping EODs are almost totally alopatric. The results discussed on this dissertation are an example of how important is fish population studies to understanding the evolutionary process related to the freshwater diversity on Amazon.
