RESUMO

In this work it is initiaJIy definedthe concept of chaos. The main characteristics of chaotic dynamic systems are shown, and the terminology used in such studies. The importance of identifying chaotic behavious on engeneering systems is pointed out. The main tools used to identify the chaos, such as: time series, phase portrait, Poincaré maps, Lyapunov exponentes, and fast Fourier tramsforms are presented, and its qualities and limitations are discussed through aplications on simulated dynamic systems. FinaJIy, such tools are used to identify the various types of behaviours occurring in the real dynamic systems implemented. Considerations about the presence of noise, which can limit ar make difficult the use of these tools, are made
