RESUMO

The main topic of the presented Thesis allude to culture contact between human opulations and the interaction processes that arise from such situations. The aim is to perceive and explain the mechanisms and the nature of the phenomenon that made possible to the populations related to Tupiguarani, Taquara and Vieira traditions, in some points of Rio Grande do Sul, to stablish sistematic forms of interaction, at about the second millenium A. D. onwards. As a main source of data, we use the several bibliographical informations that mention the evidences of contact between these populations in Rio Grande do Sul, that was interpreted by the light of analytical concepts that involve migration and colonization processes, territoriality, the stablishment of dynamic processes in frontiers and borderlands, such as the articulation between settlement and/or residential units in frontier and borderland areas and the interaction results as seen in the ceramic styles. All these archaeological informations show that, in specific points like the Rio Pardo Basin, the lower Camaquã River, the higher Rio Uruguai River and in some areas of the Atlantic Coast the interaction processes were very intense, reflected in the juxtaposition of settlement and/or residential units of the different cultural groups and in the occurrence of a mix in the ceramic styles. In all these cases, the common denominator was the presence of populations related to the Tupiguarani tradition. Thus, we conclude that, as soon as practically all areas of seasonal forests, the environment occupied and intensively explored by these populations, proceed to increase a strong negative stress caused by population pressure, only the exploration of the borderland areas of other populations territories could provide them with viable economic alternatives. However, if the effective settlement in these areas is not possible, due to the significant ecological and adaptational differences and the cost of conflictive situations in order to maintain the efective control over the borderlands is too much high in a middle or long term, another territorial strategy could be developed, towards the integration and conviviality between the different cultural groups that, certainly, would made possible to increase the economic benefits to all systems involved.
