RESUMO

This study is about rural farm architecture constructed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in the southern region of the state of Minas Gerais (General Mines). This time period is characterized by ruralizaton, economic and social isolation, and a continued link to Colonial Rio de Janeiro. Geographically, this particular region of Brazil is part of the Rio Grande river basin, formerly the Rio das Mortes. The farms studied are farms that were developed beginning in the mid nineteenth century until the end of the 19th century, following the abolition of slavery. The methodology is grounded in the survey as a primary aspect and in the comparison and intersection of the researched facts between farm structures, always supported by existing studies. I concluded that the architecture of this period of time is characterized by the use of common construction methods (a freestanding wood structure sheathed in wattle and daub), by similar programs of necessities and by the same material intention of the classic tradition, generating a specific typology within the larger panorama of Brazilian national architecture.
