RESUMO

The mesofauna of two Brazilian bromeliads, Cannistrum aff. Giganteum (Baker) L.B. Smith and Neoregelia cruenta (R. Graham) L.B. Smith, was investigated in this study. 74 samples of these bromeliads were obtained in ?resting? vegetation at Codó and Dura beaches in the Municipality of Ubatuba, São Paulo State, Brazil, between September 1976 and april 1978. These samples contained 37 1 of water, in which a total of 24.902 organisms were found (13.826 in C. aff. giganteum and 11.076 in N. cruenta). The sampled mesofauna included 26 species (14 of which were common to both bromeliad species), distributed among 5 higher taxa: Turbellaria, Oligochaeta, Crustacea, Arachnida and Insecta. Insecta showed the hisghest number of especies (15), most of which were represented by immature stages; among insects, Diptera was the most important order. The most abundant taxon was Crustacea, due to the large number of individuals of the ostracod Elpidium bromeliarum Muller in all samples. The mesofauna species of each bromeliad at each study site were classified into characteristic, associated or occasional species, according to their Index of Biological Value, which is based on frequency and abundance of each species in the sample series. In all cases, at least two-thirds of mesofauna belonged to characteristic and associated species, these results indicate a high degree of constancy of the component species of the bromeliad mesofaunas...
