RESUMO

The concept of health as going beyond merely the absence of sickness, and the constitutional guarantee of health as a right of every citizen, and the duty of the State, with the1988 constitution, led to the creation of the Sistema Único de Saúde. Its doctrinal and organizational principles are: universality of access, holistic healthcare, equity, decentralization, hierarchy and regionalization, and popular participation. Family Health has been a major priority strategy in the effective implementation and consolidation of the Sistema Único de Saude and its principles. With the work of multiprofessional teams, which give priority to building relationships with the community, it seeks to revert the logic of traditional healthcare. Among the activities carried out by the Family Health Teams, health education was selected as the focus of this study, with the understanding that it can provide community empowerment and promote health.. Thus, it seeks to discover the concepts and practices of health education of the Family Health Teems, based on an exploratory, qualitative study. Participant observations were carried out with the seven Family Health Teams who took part in the study, and twelve semi-structured interviews with workers. Using content analysis of the speeches and records from the participant observations, categories were identified for the two core themes: Concepts of health education (concepts of health education and objectives of health education); practices of health education (education models, methods and difficulties). It can be concluded that the focus of attention of the Professionals working in the Family Health Teams remains centered on sickness, which is reflected in curative practices and educational activities geared towards the prevention of sickness and its effects, based on change of habits, with the traditional education model prevailing, through the use of formal and informal methods. The importance of professional training and continuing education are evident, in view of the need to consolidate the Sistema Único de Saúde and its principles.
