RESUMO

Circular and rectangular hollow sections are used extensively in the field of the construction and mechanical engineering in all types of structures, such as offshore platforms, towers of communication, fluid conductors, bridges, footbridges and others, under different types of loading. These structures when submitted to cyclical loads, although in situation of low nominal stress, can result in a gradual weakness, with posterior rupture of the material, that represents the phenomenon of fatigue. In case of welded structures, the fatigue behavior is conditioned by the existence of geometric discontinuities that produce more or less severe stress concentration. The occurrence of points of stress concentration can take the initiation and posterior fatigue crack propagation. Many analyses of fatigue in welded joint have been made, taking in account the dynamic loading, that represents the main cause of problems in these kind of structures. In this work, a revision of the phenomenon of fatigue and its behavior in welded tubular structures are. The procedures adopted on some design codes to fatigue verification of steel structures are analyzed. Finally two practical examples of tubular structures are studied using hot spot stress and classification method by Eurocode 3 (2005) and CIDECT 8 (2000).
