RESUMO

A study of metal ion separation by a new liquid-liquid extraction technique is presented. The process involves phase separation (by the addition of water), from a ternary, single-phase liquid solution (v/v 10/25/100 : water/cyclohexane or benzene/acetone). Complexation of Fe, Cu and Co with thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) in the single-phase solution is reportad. This gives information as to the best medium for the metal ion chelate extractions. Fe and Cu are easily and rapidly complexed with TTA, and are highly extracted (>99%) even for TTA concentrations near the stoichiometric amounts; Co extraction decreases for low concentrations of TTA. Also investigated was the addition of a third metal íon for promoting the separation of two other metal ions (e.g. Fe with Cu and Co), a technique without counterpart in conventional solvent extraction. The colorimetric determination of Fe prior to its extraction and separatian was also studied; extension of this procedure to other metals is discussed.
