Exposição à violência delinquencial e fatores associados entre adolescentes de uma comunidade de baixa renda

RESUMO

Criminal violence results from interaction between individual development and social contexts, and this damage to health has increased exponentially and affected all age ranges, especially the young population. In this sense, this study teenagers exposure to criminal violence, in addition to: (i) describing the teenagers access to weapons, abusive use of alcohol, use of illegal drugs and self-esteem and (ii) analyzing the association between teenagers socioeconomic, school and teenagers family characteristics with exposure to that phenomenon. This a cross-sectional study made in Fortaleza in July-October 2009, which included 458 teenagers living in Dendê community. A self-applicable questionnaire and/or interviews were used for data collection, based on Rosemberg s self-esteem scale, CAGE questionnaire, and variables related to use of illegal drugs, access to weapons, socioeconomic, school and household characteristics. Data were organized, tabulated and submitted to descriptive statistical evaluation using Pearsons chi-square test (x2), at 95% reliability, under the Statistical Package Social Science program. The survey was approved by the Ethics Committee of the University of Fortaleza, under Opinion no. 150/2008. As a result, male gender (52.8%), the early youth stage (55.2%), catholic religion (62,4%), place of birth in Fortaleza and its Metropolitan Region (76.4%), family income below than two minimum wages (77.8%), and incomplete basic school (52.2%) prevailed. With respect to school characteristics, 69.3% said that liked to attend school, and 58.3% declared absenteeism from school over the last six months. With respect to household characteristics, 40.2% declared to belong to nuclear family, 53.3% declared that their parents are separated, 42.8% said that their father is the head of the family, 67.0% confirmed that the head of the family works, 32.3% declared that their parents are alcohol-addicted, 55.7% said that family relationships are good or very good, 69.7% answered that their parents are satisfied with their school performance, and 52.4% declared that their parents are satisfied with their friends. Out of total participants (458), 17.7% were considered exposed to criminal violence. Significant variables for exposure to that violence included: place of birth (p=0.020), school absenteeism (p<0.001), the father as the head of the family (p=0.026), alcohol-addicted parents (p<0.001), good/very good family relationships (p=0.009), and parents dissatisfaction with their childrens friends (p<0.001). In this sense, the study confirms the literature on the theme by showing that social disorganization in great urban centers, involvement with alcohol, school absenteeism and familys vulnerability contribute to teenagers involvement with criminal violence.
