RESUMO

The aim of this work is to investigate how the concept of a good student is structured among teachers, seeking to identify, within this structuring, the existence of a social representation, for subsequent investigation of the relationship between this social representation and the teachers expectations in relation to the performance of their students. It therefore attempts to respond to the following questions: What is the relationship between the representation of a good student and the expectations of students school success, among to early elementary school teachers in Blumenau (Santa Catarina). To investigate this question, an individual interview was carried out with each teacher, using the Multiple Classifications Procedure. In the initial interview, the teachers categorized their students according to criteria which they themselves chose; they then categorized the most frequently mentioned criteria from the initial interviews, to which they add the expressions good student and poor student. The attributes considered most significant in the formation of the groups to which the expressions good student and bad student were attributed, were used by the teachers to work out the profiles of their students, assigning them a value of 1 to 4 for each attribute. The data obtained from the interviews was submitted to a multidimensional analysis. Based on this analysis, it was observed that the representation of a good student is closely linked to the concept of good learning, with all the cognitive attributes that characterize it: conscientious, intelligent, active, calm, works quickly. In addition, being a good student was also linked to the amount of support provided by the family. The label poor student, meanwhile, was linked, on one hand, to learning difficulties (which apparently may not be related to cognitive difficulties), associated with immaturity, lack of family support and family problems. On the other hand, a poor student is also closely associated with negative behavioral problems such as restless, aggressive and disorderly behavior. It was also observed that there is a strong correlation between the scores attributed by the teachers to their students for the factors comprising the representation of the ideal student, and the expectations of these same teachers in relation to the future of these students, not only in school but also outside the school.
