RESUMO

The following work aimed at establishing the geomorphological meaning of weathering pools deposits based on a possible relationship between the origin of these geomorphic features and their sedimentary infill. The main investigation hypothesis was that the reconstruction of the sedimentary infill of the weathering pool enables the understanding of the Quaternary evolution of the area, by means of investigation of a sedimentary environment still closely related to the contemporary landscape. The analysis of the depositional events in the Fazenda Logradouro weathering pool, in the district of Fazenda Nova, was carried out based on a morphostratigraphic approach. Following the field identification of stratigraphic relations within the deposit, samples were collected for sedimentological, micromorphological and X-ray diffraction of clay minerals analysis, plus Optically stimulated luminescence dating of quartz and feldspar, aiming at providing the necessary data for a qualitative reconstruction model of depositional events. The results obtained for the analyzed samples point to the occurrence of isolated periods of weathering mantle remobilization towards the center of the weathering pool, as a response to the operation of high magnitude, low recurrence events, under several combinations of semi-aridity, since the penultimate glacial maximum (PGM)
