RESUMO

The fungi Colletotrichum sublineolum, causal agent of sorghum anthracnose, presents a high variability that has hindered the development of resistant hybrids. The objective of this research was to study the aggressiveness between different isolates and evaluate the genetic resistance (vertical and horizontal resistance) of sorghum lines and hybrids. Twelve isolates, collected from different regions, were inoculated on 87 lines and 63 hybrids in the field and evaluated for disease severity. Statistical analysis were carried out using the diallel method adapted by Melo &Santos (1999), which allowed to obtain information concerning the vertical and horizontal resistance of the host as well as the aggressiveness/virulence of the pathogen. The method proposed by Melo &Santos (1999) was very promising in the identification of horizontal resistance in the pathosystem sorghum-Colletotrichum sublineolum and to predict hybrids performance to anthracnose resistance in the absence of vertical resistance. Dilatory resistance was detected in 14.94% of the lines and 19.04% of the hybrids evaluated. Differences in aggressiveness and virulence of the evaluated isolates were observed.
