RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the oral health status, selfperception and knowledge from elderly caregivers. The sample was constituted by 70 caregivers from two nursing homes of the Piracicaba-SP city, Brazil. The prevalence of oral diseases was determined according to World Health Organization for basic surveys on oral health. The index Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) was used to measure the oral health self-perception. A questionnaire covering socio-demographic, health conditions, practices and knowledge of oral health was applied. Qui-square and Fisher’s Exact Test were applied to evaluate some association among the variables. The majority of the caregivers were women, with an average of 41.7 years, working for more than 7.5 years with older people, and just 11.4% were nursing. The DMF-T founded was high, with the “missed” component corresponding by 62%. A significant association was found in bivariate analysis for gender and age (p<0.0001). This tooth loss influenced the CPI (Community Periodontal Index) since 30.4% were excluded sextants. The other conditions were healthy (25.1%), calculus (20.0%) and bleeding (18.8%). Of the total, 52.8% used maxillary prosthesis and 41.4% need for the mandible prosthesis. The mean found for OHIP-14 was 8.98 confirm that poor oral health status negatively impact their quality of life. A significant association was found for educational level (p<0.05). In relation to the knowledge of oral health, all professionals recognized the link between oral health and general health, 81.4% with depression, 80.0% with diabetes, 75.7% with us of drugs and 74.3% with weight loss. In conclusion, the caregivers showed bad oral heath status, related to lower self-perception and knowledge. The adoption of further educative actions is needed to improve oral health status for the elderly and their caregivers.
