RESUMO

The objective of this study was to evaluate and to compare dentocraniofacial characteristics between predominantly nasal and mouth breathers through lateral cephalometric radiographs. Forty-one subjects, 24 predominantly nasal breathers (PNB) and 17 predominantly mouth breathers (PMB), with Class II, division 1 malocclusion were evaluated. Their lateral cephalometric radiographs were obtained in two moments (years 2001 and 2004) with a time interval of 2 years and 5 months. The age group ranged from 10 years and 10 months to 14 years and 1 month in the first moment and from 13 years and 4 months to 16 years and 6 months in the second one. It was verified that PMB presented a more dolicofacial pattern, more retrognathic mandible and more convex profile than PNB. There was no statistically significant difference in the upper and lower incisors inclination. It was still verified that with craniofacial growth, not only the profile becomes straighter as there is a tendency of horizontal mandibular growth, but also teeth tend to incline labially, independently (forboth) of breathing mode.
