RESUMO

Abstract The paper compares different ideas of Europe, developed by important Austrian writers of the interwar period, which take diverse approaches: Whereas Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s analysis follows first and foremost an aesthetical reasoning, Stefan Zweig’s essays are motivated primarily by an ethics of ethos. In contrast, Robert Musil's argumentation is based on philosophical anthropology and ethics of responsibility.
