RESUMO

A pioneer taxonomic survey of the Eunotiales (Bacillariophyta) from the Descoberto River and some of its tributaries is the aim of this study. In general, few taxonomic studies of diatoms have been done in the Federal District (DF) and Goiás State, Brazil. The Descoberto river basin, where the rivers that form the study area are located, is the main hydric source for the DF, providing more than 60% of the hydric demand. Six points along the river basin were selected: 1- Barrocão stream, near the source of Descoberto river; 2- Descoberto river, before the dam; 3- Descoberto river, after the dam; 4- Descoberto river, before Melchior river; 5- Melchior river, in the station where the drainage is treated; and 6- Descoberto river, after Melchior river. A total of 21 samples were taken during June and July of 2003 (dry season) and January and March of 2004 (rainy season). Fifty-six taxa from the three genera of Eunotiales were identified. Eunotia was the most representative genus in terms of number of taxa (48), followed by Actinella (seven) and Peronia (one). Forty-five taxa are new records for Goiás State and DF. The river point 2, in June, had the grestest number of taxa (37), and river point 5, in March, had the smallest number (two). Regarding frequency, 25 taxa were considered rare, 23 common and eight constant. E. intermedia occured in all the river points. The high Descoberto region (points 1 and 2) had the greatest species richness for both seasons. Finally, during the dry season, 53 taxa were collected, while only 33 were found during the rainy season.
