RESUMO

The present work studies the social relationship of traditional groups as they take upon themselves the concept of folk groups. While focusing on the factors that may promote continuity or change in the music making, the research is centered on the Taieiras of the Northeastern Brazilian State of Sergipe. The musical product of the popular groups is understood as a reflection of the society where they live. Its parameters and processes, however, are intimately related to the individual that, in general, organizes the group and is responsible for the creation or change in its repertoire. Through the interpretation of the behavior of the involved social actors and by consideration of the proper context of the group?s presentations, it has been perceived that the groups concerned do manipulate certain characteristics. The relevant categories, such as tradition, antiquity, anonymity, are those pointed as such in academic essays about folk groups. There is a concern for validity of the group?s identity. This concern for legitimacy derives from socio-economic interferences by public and private institutions in the contexts of the public presentations. There arises a new meaning for an old and, up to a certain degree, healthful dispute among the groups. In the new hierarchies thus created, an attachment to the tradition is highly considered. The fieldwork dealt with five groups of Taieiras from different cities. A search for characteristics held in common was a first, necessary approach. Taieiras, in general, are made up by the King and the Queen, their companions, the Taieiras themselves (women dressed in white, with ribbon ornaments in colors) and the percussionists. The music is executed without any harmonic or melodic accompaniment, which allows for possible variations from one performance to the other. In its majority, the music is devotionally dedicated to St. Benedict and to Our Lady of the Rosary. The main research drive dealt with the relation of the groups with the society around them, evidencing how the polar concepts of religion (the sacred) and recreation (the profane) cast a reflection upon the concepts about music making and the processes of creation and change of each group?s repertoire. Chapter 1, ?Introduction?, approaches the organization and formation of the groups of Taieiras in Brazil and in the state of Sergipe, reviewing the bibliography about the subject. Chapter 2, ?Taieiras in Sergipe?, describes each of the studied groups in this State, its location, characteristics and formation, focusing on analysis of the concepts. Chapter 3, ?The Sacred and the Profane and their Social Relationship?, attempts to identify how the conscience of the sacred and of the profane is present in the groups, how relations between themselves and with the society around them are affected, with emphasis on analyzing behavior. Chapter 4, ?Music?, deals with the products, trying to relate musical elements present in the different groups studied. At last, Chapter 5, ?Conclusions and Reflections?, reviews the results obtained or still to be reached through further studies, as well as some considerations and reflections are drawn from experiences lived in the field.
