RESUMO

This study with the Fulni-Ã indians (Ãguas Belas, state of Pernambuco), gives continuity to those initiated with Xucuru indians. The goals of this analysis were: to perfect the Cultural Significance Index (CSI) in the study of the importance of plant species; to delineate the importance of species for the Fulni-Ã by using the CSI and the use value (UV); to describe the patterns of indigenous knowledge about plant resource usage; and to characterize the role of native and exotic species in the Fulni-Ã pharmacopoeia. The study was undertaken by carrying out semi-structured interviews with 84 informants (23 men and 61 women) between the years of 2001 and 2003. In the analysis of the new CSI proposal the variable values were modified and a correction factor (informant consensus) was aggregated. These elements allowed the loss of great part of the subjectivity attributed to the CSI and the aggregation of consensus elements from the informant. The CSI values varied from 0.02 to 85.2 and the main one was Syagrus coronata (Mart.) Becc., an important plant in Fulni-Ã artisanship. In the study of the patterns of knowledge (by means of multivariate analysis), patterns were not observed, which indicates there is no pattern in Fulni-Ã knowledge, as it is the result of individual competencies. As for the use of medicinal resources among 91 cited plants, 40 are native and 51 exotic and ruderal species were mentioned, all of them well adapted to Fulni-Ã culture. The following plants are the most important, according to their relative importance: Myracrodruon urundeuva (Engl.) Fr. AllemÃo (2), Hyptis mutabilis Briq. (1.29), Amburana cearensis (Arr. CÃm.) A. C. Smith (1.25), Croton rhaminifolius Kunth (1.24), Mentha sp. (1.13), Sideroxylon obtusifolium (Roem. &Schult.) T. D. Penn. (1.13), Anacardium occidentale L. (1.7), Lippia alba (Mill.) Brown (1.07), and Lippia sp. (1.02). The caatinga (semi arid vegetation) is a source of different resources for the Fulni-Ã Indians, from which they obtain species that are used mainly for artisanship and to prepare remedies. The species with the most important CSI to this group are native, arboreal in general, and of medicinal use in different health systems, with the exception of Syagrus coronata (Mart.) Becc. The high values of CSI for Syagrus coronata (Mart.) Becc., Myracroduon urundeuva (Engl.) Fr. All., Lippia sp., Amburana cearensis (Arr. CÃm.) A. C. Smith., Aspidosperma pyrifolium Mart., Syderoxylon obtusifolium (Roem. &Schult.) T. D. Penn., Maytenus rigida Mart., Hyptis mutabilis Briq., and Ziziphus joazeiro Mart. reveal the importance of caatinga species in the cultural and biological survival of the Fulni-Ã
