RESUMO

In this work relations between the metallic elements and organic carbon dissolved (COD) in aquatic environments in the east of the Iron Quadrangle, Minas Gerais state, have been studied. This region was chosen for the study, because it is very rich in metals and one of the biggest mining areas in Brazil. It possesses many old mines and others which continue to function. Because of the local lithology, they release many metallic elements into the hydro - environment, of these heavy metals as Cu, Zn, Pb, Fe, Mn and others, objects of our investigations. The research was carried out in the rivers: Rio do Carmo (Ouro Preto - Mariana), Rio Piracicaba (Saint Rita Durão), Rio Conceição (Congo Socco), Rio Gualaxo do Norte (Ouro Fino Farm), beyond lakes and heaths of the region. The work started with field research a total of 30 samples were collected for analyses. The field sampling included measurements of parameters physicist-chemistries. In the samples the metallic elements were analyzed Fe, Ca, Na, K, Mg, Mn, As, Ni, Cu, Co and the COD (dissolved organic carbon). Some chosen samples were prepared for extraction of the SHA (aquatic humid substances) with post determination of the COD, and the analyses of major and trace elements. Some elements such as Fe, Mn, and the Co, had been found in concentrations above of the allowed standards (Resolution CONAMA 357/05). Cu and Ni had been classified as elements inside of the standards for group 1, allowed for the freshwaters. Correlations between major trace elements and COD had been argued. The pairs of the elements Fe and Mn, Ca and Mg, K and Mn, K and In, had shown positive correlations between itself, indicating an origin of the local lithology. The results show in many cases that positive relations exist, between some major metallic elements, as soon as between trace elements and COD. Thus, for example, Fe and COD have positive relation, indicating that the COD interacts in many cases forming complex with these metallic elements.
