RESUMO

Seed proteins of 15 species of Phaseolus L. s.l. and one species of Vigna Savi, which are native or cultivated in Brazil, were studied using gel electrophoresis. Analysis of the protein subunit patterns, aided by a numerical analysisof the data showed that the genus Phaseolus can be divided into various subgroups according to the proteins present. These groups do not always correspond to the new taxonomic subdivisions recently proposed for the genus. The data obtained support the elevation of Phaseolus sect. Macroptilium Benth to the generic level as Macroptilium (Benth.) Urb., since seed proteins of species from this section show it to be homogeneous, constant and different from the other sections of Phaseolus s.l.. The greater affinity of sect. Ceratotropis. Pip. with Vigna was also confirmed, suggesting a more rational taxonomic position for this section...Note: The complete abstract is available with the full electronic digital thesis or dissertations
