RESUMO

In this work, an attempt was made to establish a simple field procedure to be used on the Bico de Pedra dam stability and safe operation. This dam is located at Janaúba city, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. This procedure was called Risk Table. For the Risk Table elaboration a sequence of studies and numerical simulations were developed, based on laboratory tests results and field information. The studies began by performing a numerical sensitivity analysis oh na upstream liner length and of a cut-off depth on a prototype dam. Based on this simple model it was possible to check the efficiency of these flux control elements. A numerical analysis of the flux for a two dimensional state was perfomed based on the dams highest profile and the field and laboratory data available. The Bico de Pedra dam has its main flux passing through its foundation so its permeability was obtained by back analysis based on the reservoir level readings and piezometric pressures. Taking into account the obtained permeability, a numerical model was used for a classical stability analysis in terms of effective and total stress (and of construction, operation, and rapid drawdown). The studies demonstrated that the dam offers satisfactory conditions of stability in terms of sliding, piping and liquefaction.
