RESUMO

Brazil has a privileged position due to its potentiality of natural resources and agriculture, mainly, in this moment that the substitution of conventional materials used in the nutritious, pharmaceutical and cosmetic areas by natural products has gained interest and importance. However, technologies to take advantage of such resources are not fully explored. As example, the products derived from vegetable oils refining, the Deodorizer Distillate of Soy Oil (DDSO) for obtaining tocopherols (Vitamin E) and the Palm Oil for obtaining betacarotene (pro-vitamin A) can be cited. So, the objectives of this work are to study and to compare, through simulation, two separation processes for obtaining these products: Molecular Distillation and Supercritical Extraction. ln molecular distillation, the process development for recovering tocopherols from DDSO is presented. It was conc1uded that, as the tocopherols distill at similar conditions that the fatty acids, the tocopherols recovery in a single stage of distillation is not possible. In this case, it is necessary more than one stage of distillation and operation in more than one temperature, for obtaining the desired product. For systems, presenting similar characteristics, mainly in terms of molecular weight and vapor pressure, as it is this case, the falling film molecular distillator presents the best performance. In supercritical extraction, firstly, it was made an exploration on the layout of this process using the Commercial Simulator HYSYS, for separating ethanol from water. After that, this process was used to study the complete process (inc1uding solvent recovery and recyc1e) for recovering tocopherols from DDSO and for recovering carotenes from palm oil, using CO2 or CO2/ethanol as supercritical solvent, respectively. It was conc1uded that, the molecular distillation was more effective for beta-carotene recovering and the supercritical extraction was more effective for tocopherols recovering. Finally, it was made a comparative study between both processes for recovering tocopherols from DDSO, where costs with acquisition of equipment and utilities and the intended quality of the final product have been taken into consideration (productivity and purity). This comparative study was brief, showing only the most important points for the comparison of both processes
