RESUMO

This study is based on field observations of a group of Saguinus bicolor bicolor (Spix, 1823), pied bare-face tamarin (Callitrichidae: Primates), in a privately owned enclosed area of disturbed tropical rain-forest near the city of Manaus, Brazil. The study period encompassed one year of observations in an attempt to note the influences of climatic changes on the activities of the individuals in the group. There were three different seasons, defined by potential evapotranspiration characteristics, during the 11 months of data collection: two wet seasons (from april to june june of 1983 and from january to april of 1984) and one dryseason (from july to december of 1983). The study area of 20 ha is located on left bank of the rio Negro at the Praia de Ponta Negra, 30 Km west of the center of Manaus. A network of trails dividing the whole area into 50X50 m quadrats, with iron identification plates at the intersections was estabished in the area. In addition to the stydy group of Saguinus b. Bicolor, two more groups of pied bare-faced tamarins and at least 15 individuals of Pithecia pithecia (Guianan saki, Cebidae) shared the area. Four physiognomic vegetation types existed there: capoeira (young secondary growth forest). ...Note: The complete abstract is available with the full electronic digital thesis or dissertations
