RESUMO

In this work I have recorded the periodicity of flights and I have studied several aspects of the alates releasing behaviour in 24 termite species in the Emas National Park, State of Goias, Brazil. During a whole swarm season, that lasted for 47 days, I registered the occurrence of 39 swarm events. The results have indicated the existence of strategies which avoid predation during the release of alates. The timing of flights, however, seems to be influenced by environmental constraints. The same constraints may have been responsible for the occurrence of simultaneous events, since I have not found consistent evidences which support the thought for an adaptative strategy, as suggested by some authors. There was a clear pattern of sizes and colours variation between the diurnal (whose are, generally, smaller and darker) and nocturnal (bigger and lighter) alates. In my opinion, the colours are determined by environmental constraints related to solar radiation, but the sizes may result from an adaptative process
