RESUMO

The "fouling", process of adhesion, settling and development of beings livings on living and not living materials on a submerged substratum, can be harmful when it is established on structures constructed for the man. The knowledge of the biological and ecological processes in the fouling community, shows particular elements in accordance with the geographic situation and the dynamics of the ecosystem in which the animal community is inserted. In this context, the present work had as objective to study the biofouling on submerged artificial substratum in the region of Suape, the south coast of the State of Pernambuco, Brazil. The processes of ecological succession had been analyzed, conscription, as well as the reply to the treatment with conventional ink "anti-fouling". The study was developed in October of 2001 to October of 2002, using metallic plates of control (without inks), treated with common minium and anti-fouling ink. The plates had been made use in rows contend each one of them thirteen plates being twelve of accumulating them, destined to the study of the succession and a plate substituted monthly for accompaniment of the conscription process. The gotten results had shown that the fouling community of the region of Suape`s port presents typical mechanisms of succession, composites initially for unicellular bacteria that they had been represented by a dense covering of colonial diatomaceous, followed of "fouling" properly said, represented for cnidarians, bryozoans, sea worm, clams, crustaceans and tunicates. Bryozoans and barnacles had been the abundant organisms and most frequent. Colonial seas-squirt soon recover surfaces in the beginning of the settling process, dominating the space, but had to the short cycle of life soon they leave the substratum for other colonizers. Groups of fewer occurrences had formed relations of growth in superficies, mechanisms of defense or inhibitory had hindered the development them epibiosis on colonial seas-squirt and incrust bryozoans. The non-biotic parameters of salinity and temperature of the water had shown few variations. Two characteristics periods had been defined, on the basis of the precipitation measured monthly that it was followed by the conscription of larvae that it showed to be more intense in the dry period (summer). This periods of the conscription seems to be more related with the transparency of the water that it showed to be the more important non biotic factor, therefore the raised turbid of the water in the rain months that was raised by the activities of dredges in the internal port in the same period, raising the amount of material in suspension, what it hindered the conscription them larvae. With relation to the used types of treatment in the plates, the ink "antifouling" revealed efficient and of lasting action on the local fouling organisms. Common minium did not offer any protection against the development of "fouling"
