RESUMO

This work deals with the numerical study of the melting of a phase change material surrounding a horizontal heated cylinder looking at application of this type of process in latent heat thermal energy storage. The influence of the natural convection in the liquid phase has been considered. A two dimensional unsteady mathematical model has been formulated in terms of primitive variables. A transformation coordinate technique has been used to fix and become regular the fusion front moving along the time. The finite volume approach was used in order to discretize the differential equation system governed by the mathematical model, giving a linear algebraic equation system. The numerical solution was determined using a implicit scheme for the momentum and energy equations, while an explicit scheme was used for the interfacial energy balance. The influence of the terms that arise in the governing equations due to the coordinate transformation was investigated. Numerical results from the present model were compared with others models suitable in the literature with good agree. Results and correlations for some important parameters in the design of thermal systems were also obtained and addressed in the present work
