RESUMO

In studying mechanical behaviour of vegetative tissues, some difficulties related to the geometry of the samples might interfere on the results. A very elementary procedure is to prepare samples of definite geometries to determine the elastic constants. However, in some cases it is not possible to extract samples from a plant organ and that organ should be submitted to mechanical test and its own geometry taken into account. So, very often the material geometry of the plant organ should be approximated by symmetric geometries like cubes, spheres, cylindres, etc. The present work also considers extracted samples which are shaped to artificial geometries. Mechanical tests included force rate or deformation rate applied on cubic, cylindrical and spherical samples made of natural ruber of three different hardness and of tem different sizes. A special set of tests were carried out on cylindrical samples by submitting them to a diametrical load. In all the cases different deformation and force rates were tested. The work concludes that the factor geometry does influence the obtained modulus the elasticity
