RESUMO

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the surface roughness of Herculite XR V, Z 100 and T etric composite samples, finished and polished under the action of the tooth-brushltoothpaste binomial. A set of fifty-six 8 mm diameter, 2 mm thick samples was prepared for each studied material, using the incremental technique for mold filling. A sixty second exposure to visible light was used to set the samples. The activating . unit used was Visilux 2 (3M): After setting, the samples were stored in an oven, at 37° C and 100% relative humidity for 24 hours. Eight samples of each material were not subjected to the finishing and polishing procedures. The left ones, 48 samples, were divided into groups and subjected to the procedures above mentioned with differeÍlt kinds of abrasives. Each fmishing and polishing procedure lasted approximately 2 minutes. The finishing procedure was carried out with the aid of an air-water spray, high speed handpiece, moved straight on a one and on1y direction. An air-cooled, low-speed handpiece was used for the polishing procedures. Four samples of each material not subjected to the finishing and polishing procedures (control groups) were brushed on1y with distilled water. The other four non finished samples were brushed with an aque ous solution of a toothpaste. The 48 samples subjected to the finishing and polishing procedures were also, brushed with water (24 samples) or an aqueous solution of a toothpaste (the other 24 samples). A national brushing machine (Equilabor) holding 8 samples was used. Oral 30 tooth-brushes were used with Kolynos Super Branco toothpaste. The samples were brushed in a straight and only direction. The electric motor produced 250 strokes/minute and the machine was activated until the counter registered 30,000 strokes. The load of the I brush was 200 g, and 4.6 ml (6 g) of the toothpaste diluted in 6 ml of ; distilled water was used. The surfaces of the samples were evaluated before I and after each procedure and. the reading that was used was the rithmetic I mean value between the peaks and valleys scanned by the surface texture measuring instrument (Prazis-Rug3-Argentina) on a 4,8 mm path length. The results, the roughness produced by the polyester strip, polyester strip plus water and polyester strip plus toothpaste did not show any significant statistical difference to Z 100 resin. The roughest surface was obtained when F and FF diamond points plus Viking abrasives (grey and green) and gel plus toothpaste were applied to alI the studied composites. It was also observed that the restoration not polished bears the tooth-brush action better and that the use of a tooth-brush produced worse results in the polished restorations
