RESUMO

Aiming to characterize intrinsic properties of granular products and pellets of manganese ore, this study proposes an experimental methodology to allow the evaluation and comparison of the quality of five lumpy manganese ores and a manganese pellet. The work presents chemistry, mineralogy, density, specific surface and porosity, in addition to the metallurgical characteristics. In order to compare the quality of each of the materials studied, this dissertation proposed eight evaluation indexes, namely the Evolution of Thermal Decomposition (EDT), Pre-Reduction Efficiency (EP), Instantaneous Rate of Pre-reduction (VIP) Average Rate of Prereduction (VMP), Pre-reduction factor (PF), Cold Disintegration Factor (DGF), Decrepitation Index (CI) and Hot Disintegration Factor (DGQ), which proved to be representative and effective. It was observed that the physical and metallurgical behaviors of the materials are very distinct from each other, and they do not depend only on their chemical characteristics, but also heavily on their mineralogies and microstructures, which allowed their classification in typological categories. The bench scale methodology developed and employed in this work focuses on the granular zone of the electric arc furnace and successfully allowed to characterize, evaluate and effectively compare the intrinsic properties of some important products of the lumps and pellets of manganese ore.
