RESUMO

The semideciduos mesophytic forests ("matas de planalto") form one of most important forest formations ln São Paulo State, and show a number of floristic and structural pelullarites. Studies of the herbaceous and shrub strata are rare in Brazil, particulaly in forest formations where Studies have concentrated mainly on the arboreal strata. In present study, a phytosociological survey af the herbaceous and shrub components of mesophytic forest area was made using quadrats. Soil and light condictions were studied together with the floristic compositlon and phytosociology of the tree strata.in order to interpret the results. The Fazenda São Vicente forest (22 ?GRAUS? 55?S and 47 ?GRAUS? 03?w, 625 to 675m altitude) covers about 70ha and has Thornthwaite B2B, 3rb 3 ...
