RESUMO

Vitex gardneriana Schauer - Verbenaceae is a shrub encountered in the Brazilian northeastâs ecosystem âcaatingaâ. It is popularly called âjaramataiaâ, âjeremataiaâ, âgirimatoâ, âtamancaâ or âtamanqueiraâ. In the folk medicine, the leaves of V. gardneriana are used as sedative and anti-inflammatory. This work describes pharmacobotanical, phytochemical and biological studies what, until now, was not accomplished with this plant. The pharmacobotanical and phytochemical studies gave us data for the characterization of the raw material. In this way, two substances were isolated from the methanolic extract of the stem bark of V. gardneriana, the 20- hydroxyecdysone (an ecdysteroid) and the aucubin (an iridoid glycoside). This is the first time that this steroid is described as a secondary metabolite in the Verbenaceae. The crude methanolic extracts of the leaves and stem bark presented significant molluscicidal activity. The same behavior was observed with the iridoidic compound. Toxicological assays, depressive activity of the central nervous system, antiinflammatory, analgesic and antimicrobial activities were performed with the methanolic extracts of the leaves and stem bark of V. gardneriana. However, only the methanolic extract from the leaves showed significant depressive, anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities, justifying the use of Vitex gardneriana in the folk medicine. In contrast to these findings, both the extracts showed no significant antimicrobial activity. In the phytochemical boarding it was verified the presence of monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, diterpenoids, triterpenoids, steroids (β-amirine and β-sytosterol), iridoids, saponins, sugars, flavonoids and fenylpropanoglycosides. In the other hand, it was not verified the presence of alkaloids, coumarins, galic acid, condensed proantocianidines, leucoantocianidines, tannins and quinones
