RESUMO

In this work we studied oxovanadium(IV) compounds, with the VO species coordinated to the following ligands: water, acetylacetone, thiocianate, 8-hydroxyquinoline, 2´,2´-bipyridyl, 1,10-phenantroline, 2,2 -bipyridylamine, oxalic acid and bissalicylaldehydeethylenediimine. Compounds having tne group VO are coordinated with a square pyramid structure. Thus, the infrared spectra of these compounds was measured in the region 800-1200cm to study the influence of the various ligands on the axial V=O bond. The results showed a shift of the V=O stretching frequency (950-1100 cm) indicating that the shift to lower frequencies is a direct consequence of the lowering of the donating capacity from the oxygen atom to the metal (pp - dp). We also studied the electronic spectra of the above compounds (400 - 800 nm), measuring three bands assigned to d-d transitions. Using the point group symetry C4v our results agree with those in the literature, the Ballhausen-Gray
