RESUMO

This work presents an experimental research about the tool lives of face milling carbide tools when machining AISI 1045 steel bars. Milling experiments were carried out using several different relative position between tool and workpiece, varying the cutting speed and feed velocity simultaneously in order to keep constant the feed per tooth. The cutting speed was also varied without changing the feed velocity, in order to vary the feed per tooth. In all the experiments the workpiece surface roughness and tool wear were measured off line and the acoustic emission generated by the cutting process and the electrical current of the machine main motor were measured on line. The results showed that the relative position between tool and workpiece influenced toollife strongly, the smaller the distance between the external diameter of the tool and the beginning of the workpiece, the longer the toollife. Both, acoustic emission and electrical current of the main motor can be used to automatically establish the end of toollife
