RESUMO

Over recent years liquid-liquid extraction have become of increasing importance to chemical engineering, and the development of more efficient extractors has deserved increasing interest. Among the mechanical agitated extractors, pulsed columns have been shown to present better performance over other extractors, as the mixing occurs in the direction of de liquid flow, increasing the contact between the phases. Pulsed columns can be classified in columns with pulsed flows, and columns with pulsed plates. In the former the plates are fixed to the column and the pulsed across the column by means of a reciprocating pump. In the latter the plates follow a pulsed movement inside the column. Most of the work about pulsed columns found in the literature is restricted to extractors with pulsed flows. This is probably due to the relative simplicity of construction of these columns. In this work an extraction column with pulsed plates is constructed, with the objective to gather experimental data leading to a better understanding of the behaviour of extraction columns with pulsed plates. Axial dispersion, holdup and mass transfer are analysed using experimental data about the dispersion coefficient, the ftaction of holdup and the efficiency of separation, respectively. The influence of the different operating and design parameters on the performance of the columns are also analysed. Correlations and models for the column are proposed
