RESUMO

Insect disease vectors show decreased fecundity when infected with Plasmodium. This phenomenon has already been demonstrated in laboratory models such as Aedes aegypti, Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles stephensi . Some physiological processes of Aedes aegypti suffer changes when the vector is infected with Plasmodium gallinaceum . The ecdysone (20-hidroxyecdysone hormone precursor) level in the hemolymph is reduced and genes involved on vitellogenesis, lipid transport and immune response have their transcriptional pattern changed. The data obtained also show that these modifications also occur with major and minor hemolymph proteins. The fat body, ovaries and hemolymph are affected during infection, even though, the parasite development occurs mainly in the midgut. In addition, our results strongly suggest that parasites use lipophorin as a nutritional source for sporogony.
