RESUMO

The duration of the silent period in abductor pollicis brevis muscle from normal subjects and patients with carpal tunnel syndrome was studíed. Ten (10) normal voluntaries and ten (10) patients (male and female) were examined. During a maximal isommetric contraction maintaind with the pollicis in abduction, adversely the resistence imposed by the examinator, a supramaximal electrial stimulation was applied ion the median nerve. The superposition of three traces from responses obtained by stimulation was done. To obtain the averàge from each voluntary and each patient, the subtraction of the wave "F" was done, than the average of duration of the silent period from each person was obtained. The general average from ten (10) nqrmal voluntaries was 74,56 msec. This result presented a lower average than those discribed in the líterate, because of the method used in this study, the subtraction of the wave "F" from the total duration of the silent período The general average of the duration of the silent period in patients with the carpal tunnel syndrome was 94,78msec, presenting a retard of 20,22 msec according to the normal voluntaries group. In ten (10) patients with the carpal tunnel syndrome predominant alterations from sensitive fibres to motor fibres were observed. his study suggests a predominant participation of the afferents impulses on the electrogenesís of the silent period. The silent period may be a coadjuvant electrofisiological test for díagnoses of carpa I tunnel syndrome
