RESUMO

The process of energy generation, in special, the fluidized bed combustion, is responsible for gas emission to the atmosphere, generating serious enviroment problems. With the aim to minimize this emission, it has been used the solid alkaline injection, usually the limestone, during the fossil fuel bum. The efficiency of the S02 removal process, through the limestone thermal decomposition and reaction with the gas, depends, basically, on the characteristics of the reactant solid developed in the calcination step. The physical parameters that affect the calcinated limestone changes with the operational conditions used in the process. This work was developed in a fixed bed experimental system and analyzed the influence of the limestone type, the calcination temperature and the calcination time, by study of calcinated limestone physical parameters such as specific area, porosity andpore size distributiOD.Two types of limestone were used, Calcitic and Dolomitc, like sorbent. The calcination took placed at temperature between 850 - 950°C and reacting times of 60 to 180 minutes, according to a experimental design. After the physical structure characterization, the calcined solids were then sulfated at 850°C and 120minutes, in order to evaluate the capacity of802 removal of these solids. The results obtained from the experimental design used in this work show that the limestone type and the calcination temperature are the most relevant factors in the calcinated physical structure changes. However, when the S02 removal capacity of these solids were analyzed, we observed that the limestone type affects the conversion significantly
