RESUMO

Distillation is the most important separatin process and being a very high energy consuption, even quite small improvments in separation effciency would lead to cost benefits. In the present work is studied a method to improve contact between vapour and liquid in distillatinf dispersions by the addition solid particles to avoid jetting or the formation of large bubbles, thus increasing mass transfer between the two phases. Experimental work was out on a sieve plate without downcomer, in a 5,5 cm diameter column using ethanol/n-butanol as distillating system. Beds of 4g particles and various sizes used (1.70, 1.86, 2.00 and 2.50 mm). It was observed that the particle size has a marked effect on the separation efficiency. Tray efficiency is dependent on particle size and except for 2.00 mm particles experimental results show that separation efficiency is always higher than of the system without particles. The variation of the efficency with the distillation system composition, keeping the particles size and vapour superficial velocity constant, is higher at the composition extreme. On the other hand the influence of the vapour superficial velocity depended of the particles size and system composition. The presence of particles in the liquid-vapour dispersion shows a remarkable increase in tray efficiency although causes a large reduction in the plate operation limits
