RESUMO

The objectives of this study were: to analyze the cortisol salivary levels; and verify the presence of a circadian rhythm; and to study the sleep pattems of nurses based on the variables- bedtimeand wakingup time, period of sleep latency, quantityof daytimeor nighttime sleep, waking up routine, napping OObits, present sleep compared with habitual sleep. This study was conducted at the Hospital das Clinicas, State University of Campinas, Sao Paulo. The study consisted of 41 healthy voluntary of both sexes, nurses and nursing assistant, aged between 21 and 41 years. They answered a questionnaire on personal data. Each subjectcollectedthe salivasamplesfor cortisolmeasurement- at 8 hours and at 23 hours. The sleep diary recordings were filled in daily every morning for a period of 30 days. The results of the cortisol analyses demonstrated tOOtthe morning, evening and night shifts presented higher cortisol levels at 8 hrs than at 23 hours however, the night shift presented higher salivary cortisol levels when compared to values of the other shift. In relation to the sleep pattem, the nightshift group presented a longer sleep period than the others and there was a significant difference (p=0.002- Wilcoxon Test) between the quality of daytime sleep when compared with nighttime sleep.
