RESUMO

The goal of this work is to study how the most commonly used electromyographic variables change during the menstrual cycle of women. 10 women (24,02,8 years old, mean s.d.) volunteered to participate in the study. In the experiment, the subjects performed fatiguing isometric contractions, and the electromyographic signals were measured in the biceps brachii muscle (short head). The experiment was repeated in four stages of the menstrual cycle. Specific algorithms were developed for the estimation of the conduction velocity (CV), the root mean square (RMS), the absolute rectified value ARV), the median power frequency (MDF) and the mean frequency (MNF). Different statistical tests were performed to check for changes in the electromyographic variables during the menstrual cycle. Significant differences were found in the CV estimator (p = 0,002), where the tests performed in the 2nd and 4th weeks of the menstrual cycle led to a bigger slope, and in MDF (p = 0,002) and MNF (p=0,004) estimators, where the tests in the the 1st and the 4th weeks led to bigger slopes in both estimators. No significant changes were detected in the ARV and RMS estimators (p >0,05). The results suggest that the behavior of the muscles in women change with the menstrual cycle.
